This one day workshop with Dominic Stevens will look at the design and construction of affordable buildings, whether it's a home, a workshop or a community building. Using Dominic's own €25,000 house as a guide, the workshop aims to de-mystify the building process to allow the self-builder to construct simple, intelligent buildings.
The workshop will begin by looking at the principles of the Walter Segal method of timber framing and community building projects, inlcuding the Cloughjordan cooperative build. The workshop will then discuss Dominic's own low-cost build and participants will be guided through a step-by-step manual on building a similar house.
In a practical workshop, participants will then get to make a scale model of a simple, low-cost building using balsa wood.
By the end of the workshop, participants will have gained a practical understanding of the principles of low-cost building and be ready to take the next steps towards their own build project.
