Discovering patterns and the connections between geometry and art, architecture and nature can excite and inspire children's imagination and encourage them to engage with mathematics that they might otherwise find difficult or uninteresting. Paul Stang will bring his experience with older primary level children, teachers and parents to these two workshops.
Morning workshop - Creative Geometry | 9.30 a.m. to 12.30 p.m.
A hands-on course for 8 to 14 year-olds (able to use a compass/ruler) in which we will make geometric drawings, use colour in geometric art, and develop 3D geometric models (using Astro-Logix). Participants will see how easy it is to divide a circle with a compass and then fold-up their creations into interesting forms. Since this meeting is primarily suited for homeschooling families a parent or guardian is asked to attend, particularly in order to continue with the afternoon session. Materials: Compass, ruler, coloured pencils, plain paper, scissors, super glue.
Afternoon Workshop - Applied Creative Geometry, for Parents and Teachers | 1.00 p.m. to 4.00 p.m.
