Open To Grace - Anusara Influenced Hatha Yoga with Frank Brooks

So often in our yoga practice we put self effort first. We get on the mat and we immediately begin our practice without pausing to remember what it is all about. We sometimes forget the bigger picture.

The first principle of Anusara Yoga is to Open To Grace. There are different ways to Open To Grace at the start of our practice. We can pause and reflect on why we are doing the practice. We can chant OM and connect with the universal energy that pulsates around us and through us. We can set an intention for our practice which helps to dissolve the limited concept that we hold of ourselves.

We can chant the Anusara Invocation and open our hearts. We can close our eyes, bring our attention to our breath and feel the skin on our face, allowing our boundaries to soften. We can attune to the energy which surrounds and supports us. All of these help to Open us to Grace, to bring us into alignment with the currents of grace and to leave us more open to receiving grace.

As we continue through our practice, we can continue to open to grace. In every asana, we can pause and reflect before applying self effort. Initially self effort tends to be contractive in nature, as we draw energy into our core. Before self effort and contraction we can open to grace and expand. We can soften the skin on our face, open our heart and soften our boundaries. We can have a feeling of expansiveness in the upper body, sometimes referred to as "Inner Body Bright".  We can mindfully set the foundation of our pose. This helps to keep us connected to the universal energy, the currents of grace. These ideas connect us to the principle of Opening To Grace.

In this workshop we will Open To Grace, at the beginning of our practice and with each asana throughout the practice.
