“Earthship” Exploration | 13 – 15 September 2013

Earthships are a particular type of off-grid house build from natural and recycled materials, most notably car tyres rammed with earth. Find out more about them, try some of the building techniques and explore what it would be like to build one. Suitable for adults of all abilities.

You may have heard about Earthships, seen a documentary or even visited one. This weekend is your chance to explore what it might be like to build one here in Ireland.

On Friday evening we will watch the documentary “Garbage Warrior” and have an informal discussion afterwards. Over the rest of the weekend, we will look at how Earthships can be adapted to the Irish climate and give some of the build techniques a try – ramming tyres with earth to build walls and using waste to create beauty.

The weekend will be facilitated by Eileen Flanagan, structural engineer and artist who lives in a self-built earth home in the eco-village.

The weekend is interactive, exploratory and hands-on. Expect to get inspired, get muddy and have a lot of fun. It is suitable for adults and older teenagers of all abilities.

The course fees include refreshments during the breaks and a hearty lunch each day. Please let us know in advance if you have any dietary restrictions.

As there are practical outdoor sessions please bring waterproof raingear, wellies or other suitable footwear and work gloves.

The course costs €120. This does not include accommodation, breakfast or evening meal, all of which are available locally.
